Know Your Body – Relax Your Mind – Enhance Your Life

Discover the power of presence: Mindfulness Courses coming in 2019

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, it’s more readily available to us when we practice on a daily basis.

Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodelling the physical structure of your brain.

Who should practice mindfulness?

Anyone can do mindfulness practice. There are no barriers. It doesn’t matter how old you are, what your physical ability is, if you’re religious or not…

Even though we know how life-changing mindfulness can be, many people often face stumbling blocks when it comes to starting and staying with a regular practice. Do you ever feel like you just can’t sit still long enough to get the most out of mindfulness practice or meditation?

Mindfulness based training can help you reset yourself with unshakable presence and a stress-proof foundation to better handle life’s most challenging moments.  Many clients say that mindfulness based training teaches them to observe their thoughts and feelings without identifying with them. It gets easier to let issues and feelings come up without judging them good or bad or adding extra significance to them.

Heart coherence

Developing the heart strengthens the effectiveness of mindfulness. Many people experience heart-brain coherence (psychophysiological coherence) and mindfulness as complementary parts of the same wholeness intention to become more of their true self. Mindfulness helps develop non-judgemental awareness, and as the study of Buddhist practitioners found, generating a state of unconditional loving-kindness and compassion increases the capacity and the quality of moment-to-moment awareness.

John Kabat-Zinn, a leading author and proponent of mindfulness, writes “Awareness, like a field of compassionate intelligence located within your own heart, takes it all in and serves as a source of peace within all the turmoil…”

I have taught Mindfulness based interventions (MBIs) for ten years and more recently realised that combining Mindfulness and biofeedback training (coherent breathing) via Inner Balance technology (HeartMath) go hand in hand with Mindfulness based training, including the scientific evidence to support it.

Since the mind always needs something to do, combining Mindfulness and Inner Balance helps people to meditate longer and experience a fuller, richer experience. Meditators can get lost in their thoughts for a length of time before realising they have strayed. The Inner Balance technology instantly detects and shows people when their mind wanders. Furthermore, the art of focusing on our heart instead of our thoughts helps us step beyond mental busyness to explore deeper realms of awareness within their mind, body, emotions, and intuition.

Experience science-based technology and training to take charge of your life.

Proven to help you reduce stress and anxiety by increasing your inner balance and self-security.

Learn to access your heart’s intuition to become the best version of yourself.

Develop the heart. Too much energy in your country is spent developing the mind instead of the heart. Develop the heart. Be compassionate.” – Dalai Lama

What is biofeedback therapy and who can benefit?

Biofeedback therapy is a non-drug treatment in which patients learn to control bodily processes that are normally involuntary, such as muscle tension, blood pressure, or heart rate. While more evidence is needed to support its effectiveness in some disorders, it is believed to help in a range of conditions, such as chronic pain, urinary incontinencehigh blood pressure, tension headache, and migraine headache.

As it is non-invasive and does not involve drugs, the potential for risk or undesirable side effects is reduced, which could make it suitable for those who wish to avoid medications, or those who cannot use them, such as pregnant women.

It is often combined with relaxation training.

How it works

In biofeedback therapy, a device is used to provide information about physiological processes. Biofeedback using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) algorithms is a common type of biofeedback therapy. HRV is the normally occurring beat-to-beat changes in heart rate. Analysis of HRV is an important tool used to assess heart-brain interactions and autonomic nervous system dynamics (function, synchronisation and balance). HRV is considered a key indicator of aging, cardiac health, resilience and overall wellbeing. HRV biofeedback is a specialized type of biofeedback that measures brain wave activity. It may help patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), addictionanxiety, seizures, depression, and other types of brain condition.

During a biofeedback session, the therapist attaches a clip to the ear lobe and this sends information to a monitoring system. The therapist views the measurements on the monitor and identifies a range of mental activities and relaxation techniques that can help regulate the person’s bodily processes. Eventually, the individual learns how to control these processes without needing to be monitored.

Coherence

Coherence is the degree of order, harmony, and stability occurring in your autonomic nervous system and higher brain centres. A more coherent HRV pattern reflects efficient or optimal functioning, which is related to the flow and ease of energy and information flow in your nervous system, and between your heart and brain. An erratic, incoherent HRV pattern reflects stress and energy drains. The HRV or heart rhythm pattern informs the brain how the heart and body feels and affects the brain centres involved in decision making and your ability to maintain composure, especially in challenging or stressful times.

The practice of heart coherence facilitates mental functions by further opening access to your higher intelligence, and improves focus, creativity, intuition and decision-making. After being in heart coherence, we perform better! We feel more confident, positive, calm, yet energised.

Developing the heart strengthens and enriches the effectiveness of mindfulness practices. The heart is strengthened when people live with a sense of meaning, purpose and fulfillment. Heart-brain breathing coherence cultivates qualities of the heart, including appreciation, gratitude and care. Regular mindfulness practice that includes heart-brain coherence enhances physical, mental, emotional, and overall wellbeing.

Handling stress

The biofeedback training incorporates research-based self-regulation techniques and technologies that promote sustainable stress tolerance, resilience, alertness and composure before, during and after high-pressure situations. Our primary objective is to give you a better understanding of stress and resilience and provide practical tools to increase personal resilience and your ability to manage your energy and emotions.

As you learn to better manage stress, unwanted attitudes and emotions, you will build your resilience capacity and improve performance, mental focus and decision-making. The tools taught have also been proven to be effective in helping individuals manage many challenges of transition as well as issues such as poor sleep and hyper-arousal.

Hypnosis is a natural process. We drift in and out of hypnotic states all of the time.

Hypnosis is a state of human consciousness involving focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion. Using hypnosis to simply wake people from non-useful states can be just as beneficial as getting them into good states. Essentially, it is a technique for putting someone (or yourself) into a state of concentration where you are more suggestible and thus more open to messages about breaking bad habits or changing in other positive ways.

Hypnosis and meditation lead to altered states and have been used since civilisation began to help us relax, focus and increase wellbeing and creativity. There are many similarities between meditation and hypnosis. The main difference is meditation is about acceptance and being open to whatever happens, whereas hypnosis is more directional – it is about guiding us or others to something better.
